US Navy Strike Fighter Squadron 86 (VFA-86) Vietnam War.
In July 1965, the first combat missions of VA-86, then known as the “Sidewinders,” were conducted from the USS Independence against North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, flying the A-4 Skyhawk.
The squadron later flew the A-7 Corsair II and made two combat deployments to Southeast Asia, one of which was aboard the USS Coral Sea from September 1969 to July 1970.
