Air Force Distinguished Service Medal

Air Force Distinguished Service Medal first of all it was created by an act of the United States Congress on July 6, 1960. To replace the policy of awarding the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Air Force personnel.

The Air Force Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to any member of the United States Air Force who has distinguished himself or herself by exceptionally meritorious service to the United States Government.  Therefore in a duty of great responsibility. The interpretation of the phrase “great responsibility”. must achieve rank of Major General. However, as is customary for most military decorations.  As a result, it is the typical decoration for a retiring Brigadier General.

Chuck Yeager

while participating in aerial flight. On 12 December 1953, Major Yeager piloted the United States Air Force experimental rocket-powered X-1A aircraft to a speed of more than 1,800 miles per hour. This climactic flight enabled the aircraft industry to take giant strides in the field of supersonic flight and assisted in making it possible for the Air Force to place supersonic fighters in victorious combat.

Buzz Aldrin

Edwin Aldrin legally changed his name to “Buzz Aldrin”. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1951, graduating third in his class. During the Korean War he was credited with shooting down two enemy aircraft in aerial combat, and destroying a third aircraft on the ground. During his subsequent service as a NASA astronaut, he became the second person to walk on the moon.
